How it works
The display adapter and device upon which you are viewing this probably renders color with an additive 24-bit RGB model.
There are 8 bits for each of red, blue and green, for 256 levels of each.
Zero intensity for each component gives the darkest color (black), and full intensity of each gives white.
So the total number of possible colors that can be displayed is 256 x 256 x 256 = 16,777,216.
